Patient Library FIXED BRIDGES If you are missing a tooth, a permanent fixed bridge can often be made to replace it. The bridge should look and feel natural without hooks or clasps. It should stay in permanently, allowing you totally normal function. A fixed dental bridge can take the place of one missing tooth or many missing teeth. The bridge consists of one or more false teeth, know as pontic teeth, which are fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth or multiple teeth. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth as you might do with removable partial dentures. When teeth are missing without a bridge, the remaining teeth begin to change position which can lead to numerous problems, including the loss of more teeth. A fixed bridge will prevent teeth from shifting and stabilize your bite. They can also help to alleviate your risk of gum or periodontal disease, help to correct some biting problems, and even improve your speech. Back To Library
